Sardinia Reiki Retreat

In July we had the pleasure to host a Reiki retreat with Frans in Alghero – Sardinia and I was both a participant and the translator for the course. It is now the third course Frans has taught here. All three courses were organized by our lovely Cristina of Reiki Alghero: the first was a Shinpiden in August 2020, then a Reiki play day in September and a Reiki retreat this July 2021.

I would like to write a little about what happens before, during and after these courses, just to add some words to Frans’s beautiful pictures.

For us locals it is an absolute honor to host these courses in our town, with such a special teacher and both national and international participants coming especially to Alghero for this reason. I would like to speak about the beautiful heart synergy which is created when we all come together. We all take pride in our island and culture and wish that everyone has the best experience possible so we collectively do our best to give as much information possible about where to stay, what to see and especially where to dine. You will soon pick up on the fact that eating is an important aspect of this Sardinian experience. That is also why there are always special Sardinan cookies and fresh local fruit during the breaks.

As a greeting we give each other special hugs from the heart space, but also try to not create attachments. We take care of each other, creating a safe space to receive the healing we need in that moment and remember we are The Bright Light. As much as possible we try to suspend judgement towards both ourselves and others and we always try to see each other with fresh eyes, as if meeting for the first time. This individual and group propensity creates a welcoming environment for anyone whether one is feeling playful and outgoing or more quiet and introspective.

We give ourselves ample chances to spend time together both before and after class too. We go to the beach both during the day and at night to swim under the stars (super safe waters by he way). We meet up for breakfast and have large custard filled donuts called frittelle (which Frans particularly loves), we have pic nics out in nature and barbecues at group member’s homes. We have dinner out in local pizza places or restaurants and we are particularly keen on aperitivo time, when we randomly pick a kiosk on the beach to have a cocktail or a mocktail. Some of us drink alcohol and others do not, some are vegetarians, vegan, pescatarians, omnivorous, flexetarians and no one is excluded or stigmatised. We listen to music, improvise random mantras but also spend time in silence.

Unfortunately I lack the poetic skill to write about the amazing sunsets and sunrises, infinite luminous stars in the night sky, tasty amaretti ( Sardinian almond cookies – also a Frans favourite), the typical Sardinian bush perfume and the clear waters of both beaches and secluded coves. It is hard to describe that feeling of meeting someone for the first time but also having that inner knowing that you have met already in another time. There is a special lightness and openness of people who have made the Reiki principles the lens from which they perceive and manifest the world.

There are also jokes which become like a private language only we of the group speak, these stay within our hearts until the next time we meet and happily find that we all remember them and also that they are still funny. We do many things when we are all together but above all we most definitely laugh a lot!
