When you love someone, the best thing you can offer is your presence. How can you love someone if you are not there? – Thich Nhat Hanh

It is all very simple: Reiki is Love.

But this kind of love is no ordinary love. No, it is love in its purest form. Love without any strings attached, love that gives with an open heart and mind. This love does not label, judge, or distinguish; this love is free of all of that. This kind of love sets you free. As Thich Nhat Hanh states, “How can you love someone if you are not there?” He is pointing out that love is mindfulness, because if we are distracted by the past, present, and future, these distractions mean that we are not there for the other person. In fact, if we are distracted by the past, present, and future, we are not even there for ourselves.

Mrs Takata had many different names for Reiki: God power, universal force from the great divine spirit, true energy, the great life force radiating from the sun, etc. All of these point towards love, pure love.

The word Reiki also is seen as our True Self, because it is only by remembering our True Self that we start to express our pure love without any strings attached to it. We therefore could say that pure love emanates from our True Self like life force radiating from the sun.

You must love in such a way that the person you love feels free. – Thich Nhat Hanh

In a way, it is so simple that Reiki is love, and yet it is so hard to understand in its fullest. It is so difficult to love someone in such a way that the person feels free, because often we bind the person with strings of attachments. This is why Mikao Usui taught specific meditation practices, like meditating on the precepts, meditating on the symbols and mantras, hands-on healing as meditation, breathing meditations, and the moving meditation of reiju. These practices help us to loosen the strings of our attachments and to rediscover our pure love, our essence, our True Self, so that we can love everybody and everything in a free flowing way.

Often it is only when people suddenly feel they are losing their partner that they realize how much they love them. Then they cling on even tighter. But the more they grasp, the more the other person escapes them, and the more fragile the relationship becomes.
So often we want happiness, but the very way we pursue it is so clumsy and unskillful that it brings only more sorrow. Usually we assume we must grasp in order to have that something that will ensure our happiness. We ask ourselves: “How can we possibly enjoy anything if we cannot own it?” How often attachment is mistaken for love!
Even when the relationship is a good one, love can be spoiled by attachment with its insecurity, possessiveness, and pride; and then when love is gone, all you have left to show for it are the “souvenirs” of love, the scars of attachment.
– Sogyal Rinpoche

Love, pure love, is love with non-attachment, love with kindness, humility, mindfulness, and openness. It is all very simple: Reiki is Love.
